Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Weekly Store Email Of Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 On Our Yearly BIG-THEME French Champagne, Bubbly & Sparkling Wine-Tasting From Around The World! Cheers!

JOIN US For Our CHAMPAGNE/Sparkling Wine BIG THEME Tasting tomorrow night,
Wednesday December 7th, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM. THERE IS NO CHARGE for this
tasting and so bring family and friends, office associates, neighbors :
EVERYONE WELCOME! This is the most popular event that we do each year and
people talk about it all through the year and get these really big smiles and
grins that cover their faces. It's fun to witness, always makes me smile and
grin, too. ALL Sparkling wines and Champagnes will be On Special tomorrow
during our tasting, and that's from Bottle #1! You can get even better deals by
buying six or more bottles or even more when you buy twelve or more bottles.
That can be assorted between all the bubbly we sell here in the store, any
size, any style ( everything except the Veuve Clicquot ) : SAVE and SAVE and
SAVE SOME MORE.  ...   MOSTLY have a great time and learn something as you
taste, meet others and PLEASE BUY ONE BOTTLE Or More to show your thanks for
these Monthly BIG THEME Tastings that we hold here and do not charge for.

WE ALSO HAVE BAILEY'S Washington D.C. Chocolates back again for you all to add
to your purchases if you like what you taste. She makes them herself here
locally in Washington D.C. and she has sampled them here now twice already and
so many of you already know them and have bought boxes of them to share with
loved ones. They make an excellent gift and when combined, for example with the
sparkling red Lambrusco's of Italy that we sell like tomorrow's ROSENERE Black
and Red labels ( BOTH $14.99 a bottle ) that Regis will pour for you.

WE WILL HAVE SIX Sparkling Wine Stations and ONE for Bailey and her chocolates.
I still have not added all of the sparkling wines up yet : I will let that be
one big surprise tomorrow for all of you that come and brave the wet and the
rain that we are supposed to get. Sorry for that but for those of you brave
enough all the bubbly and the chocolate and good cheer will certainly make up
for the rain I believe.

WE HAVE MATT coming to show you about how sparkling wine/champagne is made.
Matt will pour the three wines of CHANDON, Carneros, California :  1)
Chardonnay,  2) Pinot Noir  and  3) Pinot Meunier : all still wines without
bubbles. Next he will pour the CHANDON Napa Brut, Rose and Blanc De Noir and
you can all debate and see what flavors in the three still wines manifested
them in their bubbly counterparts. This is a great idea and of course it
carries over into the MOET Et CHANDON French champagnes as well that we have
often included in these Big Theme tastings. This will be a fun addition. Both
Ean and I got a chance to try the still CHANDON wines of the Pinot Meunier and
the Pinot Noir and we were both blown away by their high quality. They will
also be here On Special along with the sparkling wines.

FRANCOIS HURTEL of Brittany, France will be our Special Guest of this evening.
Francois came to us years ago selling the PIERRE FERRAND cognacs and the Pineau
des Charentes, too. We still carry them today thanks to all his hard work on
that front. Since then Francois has gone onto representing the VRANKEN USA
house that represents both POMMERY and HEIDSIECK-MONOPOLE champagnes. Both will
be tasted here by Francois and that includes some of the excellent and
ridiculously low-priced vintage-dated 1995 POMMERY champagne that we are
selling for $71.99 a bottle!  SO : ask Francois about his French sparkling
wines, cognacs and congratulate him, too as he and his wife are expecting a
baby : all good.

BRENNAN DOWNEY WILL BE POURING Fun French sparkling like those made with the
Mauzac grape as well as many sparkling Italian wines that go from grapes like
Asprinio to Malvasia, Erbaluce, and others, as well as a dry Spanish cava made
from the Xarello and other indigenous grapes. He will have some of those
treasures that we all still need to discover.

JODY JACKMAN WILL BE POURING some more eclectic sparkling wines made in places
like Austria ( the Gruner Veltliner ), in Greece ( an organic Mascofilero ),
some great cavas, some Veneto Italian Prosecco and a fun, out-of-the-way
off-dry French rose made in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains ...
something for people wanting to discover more of the far-reaches of our
wondrous world.

MARK CONGDON WILL POUR some sparkling wines from as far away as South Africa,
some LOUIS DE VARANCY N.V. ( non-vintage ) Brut champagne, an organic Cremant
D'Alsace from France, some Spanish Cava from Penedes and some Italian Veneto
Prosecco, too : ALL great values.

REGIS WILL POUR Three Grand Cru Champagnes from tiny little producers that none
of you have ever heard of before. Many if not all of them are  " RM " that
means " Recoltant-Manipulant " and not " NM or CM " which mean "
Negociant-Manipulant " or " Commerciant-Manipulant ". He can explain that to
you all tomorrow ask him. If you need clarification seek me out at the tasting
tomorrow and ask me. I will be happy to explain more about this because it does
make a difference and you should all know about this. I can address more about
this in my next store email to you all. Regis will also have some Italian
Veneto Prosecco and some inexpensive Italian spumante that our delivery driver
just told me makes a " killer " Mimosa as well. That's always nice for the
weekends.

WE HAVE COVERED ALL STYLES, all levels of sweetness, from clear to dry, all
prices, and from as many grape varieties and regions of the world as possible.
Some of these are back by popular demand and many have never-ever been tasted
here before. SO  :  JOIN US.

JUST ADDED : Came In Just In The Nick Of Time : French Blanquette De Limoux of
DOMAINE B. & B. BOUCHE Brut, proprietaires-vignerons ( a Jack Siler Selection
)is dry and smooth and creamy and a blend of Chardonnay and Mauzac is it? It's
On Special for $14.99 a bottle, regularly $19.99 a bottle. Mark Congdon will
pour it tomorrow for us all,

Anthony Quinn's Store Email From Late November 2011 : How Have Things Changed In Two Years?!?

Cleveland Park Wine Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and
spirits
THE WHOLE STORE IS A THANKSGIVING compilation of many ideas and subtle
suggestions for you all to try this 2011! We are already being bombarded with
so much Christmas music and I feel that we should wait until this Sunday after
Thanksgiving to be playing it so much. I do love it. I told this to Eon this
morning as we both stocked the shelves and started to get ready for this really
busy week here in Cleveland Park. It was a really fine weekend this past one
and we were busy from start to close thanks to all of you out there with so
many special requests.

WE JUST RECEIVED the JULES TAYLOR wines 2011 New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc ( $18.99 ) that just did the top honors - Grand Champion at the Old
Ebbitt Grill Oyster Riot- Fest ( out of hundreds of wines tasted, actually this
year out of 233 submitted - it will be poured by the glass at the Old Ebbitt
Grill for the next six months I believe? ).

WE MET THE WINE-MAKER/owner Jules Taylor perhaps in May 2011 here with our rep
Mark. She has a lovely British accent. We really liked it then and are
delighted to have more of it here to offer you as you come in search of it.
Some of you stopped by last Saturday mentioning this and saying that it
reminded you a lot of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc at a better price. We all like
that, a better price that is : especially when the wine is as good as this 2011
JULES TAYLOR. WE have some in stock now for you all to get with your oysters
... just in time for Thanksgiving.

WE ALSO HAVE FREISA : that's the Italian word for strawberries! It's also the
name for an Italian wine made in the Piemonte region of northwestern Italy by
Frabce and Switzerland. This one is called CAVALLOTTO. It's from the famous
Langhe region: this one called " Bricco Boschis ", it's a 2008 ( $22.99 , 14%
alcohol by volume ). It was just in yesterday's Washington Post Sunday edition
Food section wine article in time for Thanksgiving titled : " What Do You Pair
With Baloney ? " by Dave McIntyre.

DAVE GAVE THE FREISA dry Piemonte CAVALLOTTO red two and a half stars  out of
three and wrote : " This delicious red seems to capture a autumn in a bottle
with earthy, leafy notes and a hint of decay - in a cyclical sense, like a
ferris wheel beginning its descent, sure to come around again. " Sounds like
what I might write. We will open it here and give you all a taste.Probably
later tonight as this email is fresh in your minds having just read it. SO:
Join us tonight for a taste of the indigenous grape Freisa which very few
people know much about as there is not a whole lot of it around. Cheers.

RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT HOLIDAY party wines either to take yourselves
to a party or when you are hosting it. This is what I wrote in response to
those questions earlier today.

WE DON'T HAVE TO ALL BE REDUCED to the least amount of choices. There's plenty
of choices. There always has been. You just have to know where to look for it.
Here are some examples that I will mention here today to show you all just how
much range and flexibility you all really do have. We are always ready and
eager to assist you make your dreams or those of your friends' come true.

YOU CAN BE REALLY PROUD of what you bring / and or serve and it can help really
make your party special and not just a carbon copy of so many others'. You can
stand out just like the wines you serve or you bring.

YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO CHOOSE wisely and go with your gut and heart. You can be a
success beyond imagination and still bring or serve something that is
especially meaningful to you ; and that can be anything and any style, color,
dryness or sweetness, sparkling or not, and sized from bottle to box, from
kitchy and commercial to serious and known labels, from almost any state here
in the U.S., from almost any country.

YOUR WINE CHOICES For Your Parties at UNDER $20 a bottle or box can be kosher,
vegan, biodynamic,  with really low-sulfer content, you name it?!? I know that
we can help you find it whatever it may be.

BE PROACTIVE, don't always wait to the very last minute, give yourselves some
time to do it right. Give others like us a chance to find what is special and
right for you. Profit largely, win grandly with just a bit more time and
planning. You will greatly be rewarded for all of this. Let us help you realize
yours' and others' dreams and have them come true. Cheers.

THIS ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE BIG PEP TALK. Well it is. I / we need as much as you
all do as this is simply the beginning of the rest of the year and there is a
lot to fill it with. One of our sales reps, for example from the WINEWORKS
Virginia wines of Michael Shaps just got married this past weekend. They are
playing the Pachelbell Canon in C is it( ? ) as I type this and I am wondering
if they played it at their wedding? I love it. Now this is a piece that they
can play before the end of Thanksgiving and that I never tire at hearing.
Lovely. Congratulations to you Allison and your new husband, too. May you
always be blessed, healthy and happy.

BY THE WAY : The Big-Theme American Holiday Wine-Apple Cider-&-Homemade D.C.
Chocolate Tasting last Wednesday was a grand success here. Everything showed
really well and we sold lots but still have lots here and so all that is
recommended for Thanksgiving as well. We are now selling Bailey's handmade
Washington D.C. chocolates and they are in a lovely display up by the register
and they start at $9.99 a bottle. You should try some of them. They are really
special.

THE BEAUJOLAIS THAT FOLLOWED THE NEXT DAY, Thursday was another BIG SUCCESS! We
opened the MANOIR DU CARRA BeaujolaisVillages ( $10.99 ) and Beaujolais Nouveau
bottles ( $9.99 ) : and both showed beautifully. I took a bottle home to my
wife that Thursday night of the Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau ( $10.99 ) and my
wife on the first sip and announced it was " good". That's all I need. Come and
check some out yourselves, it works really well with the meals at this time of
the year. Chill slightly and enjoy fully!

AND FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT WANTING NOUVEAU : we have the BROUILLY " Combiaty "
Vieilles-Vignes " 2007 ( Old Vines ) ( On Special for $15.99, regularly $22.99
). It's a medium-to-light-bodied 100% Gamay grape beaujolais that is a real
treat and ideal with white meats from turkey to goose to chicken and veal and
salmon, too. Lovely. We will open it here this week. Cheers.

FROMM'S : La Strada ( one of three they make ) New Zealand Marlborough Pinot
Noir 2004 ( On Special for $19.99, regularly $44.99 ) is still available and a
wonderful holiday wine. We got the last fifteen cases on Friday and are down to
seven now. Don't delay, get some today! We've already sold 35 cases. It's big,
flavorful, old-world style like the red Burgundy French wines. Best with a
meal, not really a sipping wine. It's pretty darn-gosh amazing with a meal I
will add! Cheers.

TERRABIANCA 2005 " Il Tesoro " Super-Tuscan Italian -young- dry- red -with-
tremendous- promise- still is ON SPECIAL for $33.99, regularly $44.99. IT'S A
BEAUTY, beautiful six-pack cases, and perfect for meals and for gifts. This
100% Merlot is like having a really fine Pomerol from Bordeaux, France. The
bottle is raise/ embossed like the French bottles of Cheateuneuf-du-Pape :
classy. This bottle may be enjoyed now with a meal or to age longer and enjoy
then. Either way it makes a really special gift. Buy a six pack and we will
take 10% off the price and make the bottle cost $30.59. WHAT A DEAL!

A COUPLE OF " New " FRENCH Specials :

1) AOP Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2009( $17.99, 14.5% ) from DOMAINE COSTE
CHAUDE Madrigal is a youthful, robust, hearty mouthful of 70% Grenache and 30%
Syrah. What at a treat.
2) Cotes Du Ventoux 2008 ( $17.99, 14% alcohol by volume ) from the
DOMAINE FONDRECHE / from Fayard has just been given Bob Parker's blessings and
we were lucky to get a couple more cases before it disappeared./ from Fayard.
WE tasted some of this a few months ago down at Lavandou Provencale restaurant
when Bobby Kacher had his portfolio wine-tasting at the Washington Club on
Dupont Circle. It showed really well with Florence's cooking. What a treat. It
will do really well now with the heartier meals, stews and roasts and
cassoulets that we make.
3) Crozes-Hermitage " Le Millepertuis " 2007 ( great vintage ) northern
French wine made from 100% Syrah. Eon and I tried this with the president of
his own company, Jim Reeves. Thanks Jim, this is a really special Syrah that
may be enjoyed now with a meal or cellared for many years!
4) MARSANNY " Clos Du Roy " from the Cote D'Or red Burgundy region, this
young and fresh 2009 ( $34.99 ) is another real steal from Jim Reeves'
portfolio. It's exciting to have it as well as his Crozes-Hermitages. This is,
of course one of the great red burgundy values and made from 100% Pinot Noir by
law. It , too is a great food wine and really fine with turkey and goose and
even wild salmon and much, much more.

EON AND I ALSO DISCOVERED Some Dry Rose and Dry Whites that impressed us
no end :

ROSES :

1) BOXWOOD ESTATE 2010 " Topiary Rose " ( $17.99 ) is a really nice,
complex, sophisticated dry Bordeaux-style rose with a high concentration of
Cabernet Franc. It needs a meal : it's too flavorful to drink all by itself.
That's why if you want to sip the BOXWOOD VINEYARD dry rose you need to , you
need to try the " Boxwood " version for $17.99 that is smoother and silkier and
easier on the palate all by itself.
2) Cotes Du Rhone 2010 Harvest-Dentelle from the DOMAINE ROUGE-BLEU ( a
blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Carignan ) is also a softer easier-to-sip dry
southern French rose. It has a bit more color ( deeper -redder ) than the two
BOXWOOD Virginia, Middleburg dry roses. This is On Special now for $13.99 a
bottle.
3) Cotes-Du-Provence 2010 " Cuvee Tradition " dry biodynamic French rose (
AB certified . 13% alcohol by volume ) from the DOMAINE LES FOUQUES is On
Special for $13.99 a bottle now and showing beautifully! It's a perfect holiday
wine and for this unseasonably warm and balmy weather, too.
4) Dry Virginia rose and Raspberry wine from Leon, Virginia ( $12.99 ) and
made by the RAPIDAN RIVER winery that is now owned by PRINCE MICHEL. This is
quite a bit drier than one would expect, it's not a fruit bomb. As a matter of
fact with a salad using some raspberry vinegar this would be a real treat! You
all should try some. Cheers, it's fun, really it is.

WHITES:

1) Sparkling New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ( $18.99 ) from LAKE
CHALICE and called " Cracklin' Savie " showed really well this past Saturday
when we tasted it and we sold quite a bit when Paulette poured if for you all.
It's brand new and really tasty, fun and refreshing. I called it a great palate
cleanser. Works for me.
2) Cremant De Biurgogne sparkling " Pur Chardonnay " from France's
Burgundy region ( On Special for $14.99 ), made by BAILLY LAPIERRE is a classic
that we love to sell here and have for years. It's so flavorful and wonderful
and a real special treat, and what a value!
3) Chardonnay Estate-Grown from the Los Carneros region of California (
$14.99 ) is slightly-oaked from EGRET and twice now Eon and I have fallen in
love with it. Classy, tasty, bright, filled to the brim with promise : it's a "
keeper! "

APPLE CIDERS From FOGGY RIDGE :
New and Exciting! WE tasted 4 of them with Dawana at our Big-Theme
American Holiday Tasting.

1) Hard Cider " First Fruit " ( $21.99 ) was my favorite of the four. Just
like Goldilocks I found a place to hang my hat and relax and dream of
everything that awaits me.
2) Hard Cider Sweet Stayman " was simply just a bit too fruit-forward and
rich for me, a bit heavier, too on my tongue and palate. It's all personal
taste of course. We also have the " Serious " that is the dries and the most
tart and tangy. Not enough of a finish for me. They are all 750ml bottles and
all sell for $21.99 a bottle. The Handmade is a also quite nice. It comes in
500ml bottle, 7% alcohol and sells for $16.99 a bottle.

THREE BEERS FROM SANTOS : SALES!

1) APRICOT ALE unfiltered wheat ale from PYRAMID is On Special $5.99 a
six-pack of 12 ounce bottles.
2) ABITA LIte beer  is On Special for $5.99 as well. What great deals
Santos!
3) JOCKAMO IPA from ABITA is also On Special for $5.99 a six-pack. Wow!

Jim Beam to Beefeater and many, many more. Come check them out or call us at :

dry white Sauvignon Gris and introducing the  " Lota " 2007 that's for
cellaring and for some special rainy, cold day in another ten-twenty years! Try
it now, buy it now, drink it later.

everything and have a great Thanksgiving with family and friends and even new

4) BOUCHARD AINE Beaujolais Nouveau 2011, $9.99. Mix a case of these.
Throw your own " Nouveau " party for your friends and then have some to get you
through the end of this year and our fabulous holiday season.
WHAT Is NOUVEAU? It means " new ". What is BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU? It's all
made in Burgundy, France. It is all made from 100% Gamay grapes at the southern
tip of Burgundy. It's fun, it's fresh, it's lively, it's got a slight tart
edge, it's got a bit of a bite. It's toasty and roasted berries and a delight
to drink slightly chilled. It goes with everything : all casual meals as well
as more fancy ones. it's just a delight for most people. It's a tradition and
it has always been popular though many people in our country I feel still do
not know much about it. SO : either do your own party or go to a restaurant
like Lavandou or Bistro Lepic, the Bistro Du Coin, the Petits Plats and
celebrate and then continue celebrating at home with family and friends. It's
a way to welcome in the holidays. We can help you, too as you may start
celebrating earlier than later this Thursday. We will have the four bottles
open here all day long so come and " experience " this year's 2011 NOUVEAU with
us! If you have any questions please do ask us here at the store.

HOW IS NOUVEAU MADE? It's made with a longer process called " carbonic
maceration ". That means simply that the grapes are put into a tank and that as
they are put into the tank the pressure from those grapes on top of those below
crush the juice. This way the crush is as smooth and as gentle as it can get,
with the least amount of agitation to the grapes so that the juice that comes
from the grapes is as pure as and as least-disturbed as possible. That makes
the taste brighter and fresher - all good things.

NOUVEAU IS ALSO BEST WHEN MATCHED with food. You don't want to drink too much
all by itself because AS SOON AS IT'S FERMENTED it is bottled. This preserves
all the natural acidity of the Gamay grapes as there in NO BOTTLE AGE, NO
CONTACT WITH wood or oak, only bright and shiny stainless steel.

NOUVEAU is not made for aging. However, and this is a big however, it does not
go bad immediately. It simply is not intended to be around for a very long
time. Buy it and usually drink it all up over the holidays. You don't really
want to be drinking the spring after it was made. But don't panic, always check
what you have first before simply dumping the bottle out. Chill it and taste it
to see first what you still have. It does lose some of the acidity and soften
some as it ages over the months. That is quite agreeable to many as it takes
some of the sting and the bite away. But try and drink it up earlier than
later. MOST OF ALL : relax and enjoy the joy that beaujolais and
beaujolais-villages nouveau provides each and every year on the third Thursday
of each November.

LET'S NOT FORGET APPLE CIDER! We have the FOGGY RIDGE Virginia apple ciders
from Dugspur. Anyone ever been there? The owner herself has been here and
tasted me on these and we are thrilled to have them. They : all five that we
have will be tasted here tomorrow, Wed. Nov. 16th, 2011 ( 5:30-8:30PM ) at our
Big-Theme American Tasting. It will be a breath of fresh air after the wines to
have some apple cider : Handmade, Serious Hard, Cider Sweet, First Fruit Hard
and Pippin for you all to taste. Remember there is no charge. Please join us

Anthony Quinn's Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits' Store Email Written & Posted Tuesday September 3rd, 2013

Cleveland Park WineCleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

IT'S THE HARD WEEK AFTER LABOR DAY WEEKEND

IT'S ALWAYS SO HARD FOR EVERYONE MENTALLY on this week that follows our Labor Day weekend as many take their last swim in their neighborhood pools, lifeguards return to school or go off to college and for many students to start school whatever grade they may be in. I was witness this weekend to this spectacle and even with a grayer day many young children were playing merrily to their hearts' content in our pool, even waiting patiently, feet dangling over the edge of the two diving boards for the bell to ring letting them know that they could once again dive and jump into the pool water on this last day. As I said in last week's email : everyone was squeezing the last drops of joy and relaxation and summer that they could before this Tuesday morning!
THE ABOVE is from the store email that I wrote and posted the first week of September 2012! Wow, seems like such a long time ago. How have things changed since then? How was that summer versus this year's summer? Do you all have fond memories from both?
LET'S KEEP SUMMER and OUR VACATIONS ALIVE as long as possible. I am going to do my best to try. So far so good. Even while this Labor Day weekend while I labored to water-blast our back wooden deck ( that's very large by the way ) I would take breaks to write my poems and also to type my old " Dinner Party " story - written by my own hand-writing from 1998-2001 : before " 50 Shades of Gray " onto my blogs. Great exercises both.
LADIES, what do you all think of the two lead characters picked to play the roles in the 3-book trilogy " 50 Shades Of Gray "? What beer, liquor , cider or wine did you drink while reading each book? Do you all know any men that read the three books? If so, what did they think? What beer, cider, liquor or wine did they drink while reading the books?
SPEAK UP MEN, here's your chance! I thought to myself this morning that reading the books might be a good idea so that I understand better what women want/ need/ are fascinated by? All us men should read these three books. But from what I have heard so far it just doesn't seem like I would really enjoy them? What do you ladies think? Let me know?
NOW WITH THE MOVIE in the works we need to put our heads together and see what beer. cider, liquor. liqueur and wine are appropriate for watching the movie, for any trial-runs before to see what might work best?
WE CAN DISCUSS this perhaps at one of our next weekend tastings? We may have dropped the ball already here on numerous occasions for not picking it up " and running with it " as the books were released and read voraciously by you?! Our loss, will have to try and make up for lost ground as we also try and keep ...
WHATEVER VESTIGES of SUMMER that we can wrangle and hold onto as, hopefully we wind into a lovely Indian Summer with low Humidity and baby blue skies and fall leaf foliage that has us ' oohing and wowing ' and pursing our lips to make one continuous " O " out of our mouths.
TAKE THE TIME to go outside and sit still and look up all around you. Sip some of the ST. GEORGE  " Botanivore " California GIN ( On Special for $34.99 a 750ml bottle, 45% alcohol by volume,www.stgeorgespirits.com , Alameda, CA., since 1982 ) : handcrafted, " a botanical balancing act of the highest order, pot distilled from wildcrafted juniper and an array of choice herbs, spices and citrus."
THIS MAY HELP you all - give you a bit of grounding, a bit of focus, an attachment to the outdoors that is so much larger than us, especially as the gin works it's way past the portals of your lips and down the central trail of your throat and snakes it ways into every nook and cranny and spreads a warmth and a " charge ! ", and a " start! " and a " giddy-up! ", and a release from life's many unwanted pressures that distract you from your main purpose of just " being gloriously ". Feel the gentle purr, the slap of a whip-like burn that will light your guts and be like an internal bonfire all of your own making. Who will you share it with, that's the question now?
BUT HEY, YOU may rather have an IRON FIST " Velvet Glove " Stout instead from IRON FIST Brewing Company, whether you are in Vista, California or not?!? We have it On Special for $11.99 a 750ml bottle, 9% alcohol by volume, www.IronFistBrewing.com. They write on the back label : " You know the expression, ' A Velvet Glove and an Iron Fist'? It was coined to refer to a regime that used a soft exterior to hide it's punishingly unforgiving nature. This seems an apt description to our Velvet Glove. It's placid appearance and unparalleled smoothness hide the truth, this is one fiendishly unrelenting stout. Rich chocolaty espresso dominates the flavor profile, with a velvety smooth texture that will haunt your senses... "

WONDER IF A WOMAN wrote this text above for the IRON FIST Brewing Stout? If so, do you think that she might have been reading or read " 50 Shades Of Gray "?
WHAT PART of the 3-books might this IRON FIST Stout be truly appropriate? You all have to weigh-in on this as I have not read the book yet, but do plan to do so soon. HELP!
I KNOW, ENOUGH'S ENOUGH, or maybe not nearly enough! That's the conundrum facing us.
I JUST SPOKE TO TWO OF OUR delivery men that brought us more of the delicious dry white Veneto white Lugana  2012 from the southern tip of Lake Garda from  AZIENDA AGRICOLLA OTTELLA, $14.99 a bottle, 12.5% alcohol by volume,  ) , and I asked them if either of them had read " " 50 Shades of Gray "? They both said : " no ", one added : " But the movie's coming out, that's when I'll get a chance to see what it's all about." SO : when and if you do read one of the three books : have a glass or more of this deliciously refreshing Lugana white. You will like it.

IT'S ALSO a great reminder that you are still basking in the supreme pleasures and glories that are summer, being outside, having a grill, sitting in the shade and listening to the summer's wild and frivolous and mischievous-at-times-too escapades. Where and when day's melt into eventful evenings and that wind their ways into long and soulful, heartfelt and soul-bearing conversations, both public and some private over cigars and brandies, or BAILEY'S Irish Cream ( On Special for $25.99 ),  or  DOMAINE DE CANTON Ginger-saturated VSOP French cognac ( $31.99 ), too.
RAGE AGAINST THE COMING OF THE LIGHT! Do you think that Dylan Thomas might have said that ever in his life? How did he feel about those long nights that had to come to an end eventually with the dawn and the sun's poking it's round head over our horizon?!?
THEN, AS WE PUT TOGETHER A CASE of wines for the beach I asked our good male customer : " Have you ever read " 50 Shades Of Gray? " He responded : " No but that was not written for us to read ". I immediately said : " What! Why? " and we continued to talk about it and put together his case of a Baker's Dozen for his " Last Hurrah " at the beach. He's got some of the really fine Spanish Gran Reserva 2005 from Valencia, $13.99 a bottle. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE deal and wine, both, amazing for this price : Spain's highest quality level from a great year and under $15 a bottle - impressive all around. I convinced him to buy 2 bottles of this.
BUT HEY :  LET US HELP YOU make this process of an eventually disappearing summer be  less painful than it has to be. You simply have to see it as another opportunity, a chance, a challenge and something to look forward to as hard as it may seem now.

WITH THIS SALE IN MIND I will continue to mention some of the GREAT DEALS that we have for you all here now:
       1) MEURSAULT  dry white Burgundy 2009  ( On Special for $44.99, regularly $53.99 a bottle, a great vintage, 13% alcohol by volume ) from  PIERRE ANDRE au Chateau de Corton Andre is another steal for you all to consider when you want to really treat yourselves or a friend . With tomorrow's still-wine sale of any bottle over $20 the price comes to $35.99. That's a GREAT DEAL for this vintage, this famous village of 100% Chardonnay wines and from the really good house of PIERRE ANDRE!

     2) 2011 Dry Red Burgundy Pinot Noir from the DOMAINE HENRI NAUDIN-FERRAND ( On Special for $14.99 a bottle,, 12% alcohol by volume ) : It's young and lively and lovely and so promising as it starts to shed some of it's steely exterior and permit one's tongue to penetrate to the juicy liquid meat of these Pinot Noir grapes that gave up their lives to reward us for our patience and admiration. SO : OPEN the bottle 45 minutes before drinking it, even decant it : it will deliver, it will come through but it cannot be rushed! What a treat.

    3) Pedro Ximenez dry white Chilean food wine, this 2012 Reserva from the Elqui Valley ( $11.99 a bottle, 13% alcohol by volume,www.falernia.com ) is made from a Spanish sherry grape by an Italian and made in Chile! On top of all of this it's also made from a grape that makes a famous sweet sherry and here it makes a dry and complex dry white that is laden with gobs of nutty overtones, a touch of oxidation perhaps, and honeysuckle and honey accents that will temp all those remaining bees and bumble bees that are still around storing up their food treasures for the winter that will eventually displace this glorious AUGUST SUMMER that we have enjoyed here in the Washington D.C. metropolitan region. This is a fine food wine indeed. It's got all the weight, the presence, the fortitude, the stamina and the character to withstand any barrage of extra-strong flavors and tastes, textures, layers, sauces ... herbs, hot-heat peppers, spices - whatever is there!

    4) " Ship Of Fools " 2010 dry white blend of 50% Pinot Blanc, 45% Pinot Gris and 5% Pinot Noir ( $18.99, 13% alcohol by volume,www.cgtwines.com , from the Chateau Grand Traverse, Ltd, Traverse City, MI ) is a flavorful and tasty white that will taste great with many meals now. Drink something fun and exciting and that will please and surprise you both. Support one of the States that is not so well-known for it's wine but should be when you try this white blend. A treat. Cheers. Just a couple of bottles left of this before we move into the " new " vintage.
COME FOR OUR SALE of STILL WINES tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 5th, 2012 and inquire about our weekend wine-tastings. Buy some of these great wines I have written about above and SAVE 20% OFF the marked sticker prices. What a great way to save here and have both everyday wines as well as some great special wines, too.
TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE of our three-Part Still-Wine SALE above. If you cannot come please call us ( 202-363-4265 ) or respond to this email with your orders, questions or requests. Let's work together. Cheers.
MORE WINES FOR YOU ALL :

          2 Dry Reds :
     1) Salice Salentino Riserva 2008 from CANTELE ( $13.99 a bottle, 13% alcohol by volume, www.cantele.it, from Guagnano, Italy in Puglia ) : is made from 100% Negroamaro grapes, is a D.O.C. wine, the flavors are really well-balanced with softer tannins and acids so the fruit pulls everything together and the taste is so satisfying!
     2) Monferrato Rosso 2007 From SULIN ( $17.99, 14.5% alcohol by volume, ) is a blend of the grapes I believe with a lot of Barbera in it. Brennan tasted the Brabera when he was here this past Labor Day weekend and we enjoyed that very much. Too bad we could not open this as well as I would have loved to have tried them side-by-side. I know that this dry rosso 2007 is fuller and more robust and flavorful. It probably also needs a meal. From Italy's famous and fabulous Piemonte region this is a well-focused, firm and tasty dry red Italian blend. I did try it back in March of 2012 and that is why it is here. I really liked it then and will probably like it even more now that it has another several months of bottle age since my taste buds last crossed paths with it. Cheers. Thanks for the excellent Saturday wine-tasting here with you Brennan from 2-6 PM. THIS WAS TAKEN from last year's store email. We still have it, though, AS WELL AS the " Sine " 2010 Barbera Del Monferrato, $13.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume. BOTH are wonderful and balanced and great with a meal!
BUT HEY : WE ARE SO MUCH MORE than just wine!
SANTOS, WHAT HAVE YOU For US ?!?  ALE, BEER, & CIDER :
          TWO FABulous PUMPKIN ALES :

     1) Our PUMPKIN ALE from SARANAC  ( On Special for $5.49 a Jug that has a handle - like old bottles of whiskey to chug! It looks like a 750ml bottle, I like it, go to : www.saranac.com for more info ) : new and exciting, and certainly a fun presentation and SARANAC does a fine job. Come get some while you still can, may be very limited availability in this presentation. Ask Santos.
     2) Fall Hornin' Pumpkin Ale from ANDERSON VALLEY, Boonville, CA. ( $11.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce cans, 6% alcohol by volume, go to : www.avbc.com for more information ) : Santos says that he has never seen this before, it's a first for us, SPECIAL, BE THE FIRST to try it here in Washington D.C. Be the first to tell others about it. Sounds so new and exciting and cutting edge. After all, ANDERSON VALLEY is high quality indeed, since 1987...

          BEER :
     1) Oktoberfest from GOOSE ISLAND ( On Special for $9.99 a 6-pack of 12 ounce bottles, 6.4% alcohol by volume, Chicago, Illinois, go to : www.gooseisland,com for more information ) : WHAT?!? Oktoberfest now, it's just September, not even close to October yet! But that's the wave of the future, release everything really early these days. Keep that in mind as you plan your buying strategies, that way you will not be disappointed later when you go in search of it.
AND RAVI, What SAY YOU About LIQUOR, LIQUEUR?
     1) Rum from FLOR De CANA , this 7-Year Old GRAN RESERVE , Slow Aged ( $24.99, 750ml bottle, 40% alcohol by volume, from Nicaragua, imported, kosher, go to : www.flordecana.com for more info ) has a lovely darkly-golden patina, a sheen, a scent, a silky essence and perfume that wafts so un-alarmingly  and straight-pure to our cores as we smell and sip, and pause to reflect how lucky we are to have this wonderful moment together with still all our senses and mental faculties clear and intact : ohhhhh yes! A great time to  smile and grin and " wax-poetic " about our recent exploits and adventures, some we share some we keep buried so deeply, privately that this FLOR De CANA can only know.
     2) Red & Blue Bikini 2-Piece from SKYY Vodka ( $15.99, 40% alcohol by volume, San Fransisco, CA. , www.skyyvodka.com for more info ) : the bottle packaging SCREAMS OUT summer and warm and hot weather, at the beach or by the lake, of bathing suits and relaxation and feeling stress-free and relaxed and smiling broadly, grinning sheepishly, burning the candle at both ends for as long as there is light and flame and any reserve of energy left at our disposal to carry us along until we drop with delirious glee and rest and all-consuming summer's bountiful satisfactions. Buy this and keep refilling it with more SKYY Vodka to keep the summer alive for yourselves.
AS YOU CAN PLAINLY READ with all of this that I am still clearly in a SUMMER'S STATE-OF-MIND and happy to still be so. SO : please bear with me, I have a whole lot weighing on all of this, a lot of pressure to keep summer with us this week. Cheers.

     3) Rare Fine Champagne VSOP French Cognac from HINE ( $62.99, 750ml bottle, ) : some really fine and smooth French cognac. I was drinking some with my neighbor about three weeks ago as he got ready to deploy again to Saudia Arabia once again. We smoked some Astral cigars I still owned and drank some of this very special HINE VSOP Cognac and told some personal stories as 50 shades of stress dropped off our clothes and we shared our humanness and our honesty : how HINE RARE and exciting was that ( !?! ) into the wee hours of the night. Work was hard because of this but it was a price I'd gladly pay all over again. I thanked him for his service and keeping our country a bit safer for those of us civilians that stay behind here and never see what he and the others see or experience. Cheers!
     4) Walnut from THE " Original " NOCELLO from TOSCHI ( $31.99, imported from Italy, 24% alcohol by volume, from Savignano sul Panaro ( MO ), Italy. What fun, still popular after all these many years. Great to drink while reading an all-absorbing novel.
FOUR MORE WINES To Enjoy While Reading 50 Shades Of Gray:
     1) Sancerre Dry Loire Valley White, 100% Sauvignon Blanc, from the DOMAINE De CHEZATTE ( $22.99, 750ml bottle, 12.5% alcohol by volume, go to : www.domaine-chezatte.fr for more information ) : steely clean, crisp, vibrant, like plucking a taut guitar string or violin string, the flavors will resonate and reverberate long and satisfyingly on your tongue and full palate. What a tasty treat, enjoy with some fresh goat's cheese! I asked a Frenchman earlier while discussing this wine : " Have you read : ' Fifty Shades Of Gray ? ' " He responded : " No ", but that his wife had.
     2) Cracklin Savie Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from LAKE CHALICE , New Zealand ( $18.99 a bottle, 12.5% alcohol by volume ,www.lakechalice.com ) : mature, multi-layered, more weight and complexity with the bottle-aging - you can lose yourselves and your palate and tongue in the folds and the nooks and crannies that have miraculously appeared in the tapestry of it's flavors : Sauvignon Blanc takes a solid form of marble and stature and a Rodin-esque quality that shouts for food, for a meal, for a release from it's bottled-confinement. Be the one, release it, free it, unshackle it's myriads of flavors, textures, taunts and teases and pleasures.

     3) " Pure Syrah " from La Maison  GUYOT, 2010 ( $14.99 a bottle, dry Northern French Rhone wine from a great year , 13% alcohol by volume ) : effusive raw and thick Syrah toasted-roasted fruit and all the spiciness and lovely messiness and mildness and munchiness that comes in a liquid Syrah form : from the most famous region in the world for a Syrah's true, unvarnished, humble and mighty and amazing expression. Cheers.
     4) Lambrusco Vino Rosso Frizzante-sparkling , this " Rigoletto " from ROBERTO NEGRI in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region ( $18.99, 750ml bottle, 10.5% alcohol by volume , San Giorgio, ( MN ), Italy ) : it's dry and sparkling and fresh and lively and bubbling and earthy and spicy and yet also bright and frothy : EVERYTHING in perfect balance. What a wonderful treat to enjoy with smoked meats at a meal or afterward with some Biscotti. Lovely. Diego poured it here this weekend and everyone loved it. It was a real treat for everyone this past Labor Day weekend. Grazie Diego.
